Job Description: The director of special education at ACMS will help the school provide full access to the curriculum for all of our students by working with teachers and families to address the wide range of learning needs and learning differences that exist within our students.
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
* Working with the school’s principal and leadership team to develop a vision for a special education program consistent with the school’s overall mission and philosophy
* Planning and facilitating weekly meetings with special education teachers to carry out the vision of the program
* Directing the support and evaluation of special education teachers
* Overseeing IEP and 504 development, implementation, and compliance process, including paperwork requirements and facilitation of meetings
* Managing the budget for special education
* Serving as the main point of contact for questions and issues related to special education at ACMS, including relationship with Atlanta Public Schools’ Program for Exceptional Children
Qualifications: Candidates for the position of director of special education should possess a willingness to collaborate with other teachers, strong communication and organizational skills, and a sense of humor. Qualifications include: Georgia educator certification and/or the completion of a teacher preparation program in special education and experience working with middle school students is strongly preferred; experience working with the Atlanta Public Schools is recommended but not required. Salary is commensurate with experience. The position of director of special education can be half-time on its own or full-time with some teaching responsibilities.
