Job Description:
Capital City Public Charter School seeks motivated and creative aspiring teachers for our 2008-2009 teaching fellows program at our Lower School campus in Washington, DC. We are currently recruiting teaching fellows to work in collaboration with lead teachers in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Fourth.
Duties include: planning lessons and expedition projects with an experienced teacher, working with small groups and individual students, accompanying students on fieldwork, attending weekly professional development sessions, supporting the school’s social and academic curriculum, participating in weekly consult and supporting our inclusion program, communicating with parents, and sharing your talents with children and staff. Teaching Fellows also participate in a yearlong seminar on active pedagogy.
Capital City’s Lower School, founded in 2000, serves students in grades PK-8 and is recognized as a national model for school reform. The Upper School, opening in fall 2008, will serve a diverse group of students from across Washington, D.C. in grades 6-12. In 2007 Capital City had the highest reading and math scores among District charter elementary schools. Capital City implements the Expeditionary Learning model (www.elschools.org) in tandem with the common principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools (www.essentialschools.org). Through Expeditionary Learning teachers craft expeditions that incorporate projects, research, fieldwork and service to support students in meeting rigorous standards. The CES principles emphasize equity, depth over breadth, student leadership, and authenticity. Capital City’s program also features a strong social curriculum, a commitment to diversity, a strong inclusion model and the integration of arts into the curriculum.
Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree, experience working with diverse student populations, and strong collaboration skills are required. Education degree or coursework and the ability to speak Spanish are also desired.
Salary & Benefits:
Salary: $25,000 plus health, dental and other benefits
