CES Job Announcement

Director
Organization: Bronx Charter School for Better Learning
Type of Organization: Non-CES School
Type of Job: Administrator
Grades: Elementary School
Application Deadline: 06/27/2008

Job Description:
The Bronx Charter School for Better Learning was founded in 2003 by experienced and passionate teachers and administrators whose goal was to demonstrate the value of an educational approach that can dramatically improve the school experience of any child, regardless of socio-economic background. The foundation of this pedagogy asserts that at-risk students have the same power to learn, but are less likely to tap that power in a typical school environment. This first through fifth grade charter school of 285 students is a vibrant learning community. In recognition of the current academic accomplishments of its students and strong leadership at the board and school level, the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning has recently been granted an unconditional, five-year charter renewal – a distinct honor – to provide instruction to students in grades kindergarten through five, with a maximum projected enrollment of 342 students. The culture of the school is one where each child’s innate ability to learn is nurtured, protected and directed toward mastering all traditional subjects. The expectations for the students at Bronx Charter School for Better Learning are very high. Students are encouraged to experience and come to understand concepts through action and reflection; students’ errors are welcomed as information that guides instruction; students are expected to become more independent, autonomous and responsible, and they are expected to excel academically. The Executive Director will provide the necessary leadership to sustain and nurture the mission, core values and overall spirit and excellence of Bronx Charter School for Better Learning. Succeeding the Founding Executive Director, the new Executive Director will work closely with a dedicated and diverse faculty and staff to ensure opportunity, respect and a stimulating educational atmosphere for every student. Reporting to the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning Board, the Executive Director will ensure that the curriculum, programs and operations are both vibrant and well managed, that the School is fiscally and administratively sound, and that the educational program consistently meets the academic accountability goals set forth in its charter.

Qualifications:
Experience that demonstrates a passion for providing high quality education and the opportunity for intellectual pursuit to an underserved constituency in an urban community with a high density immigrant population; Strong background in teaching and learning; knowledge of the process of curriculum development and assessment; basic understanding of the Charter School movement; Proven managerial, problem-solving and strategic planning capabilities, preferably in the field of education or in a nonprofit organization that focuses on education; A history of successfully leading and interacting with a dedicated board and staff who have diverse professional skills and perspectives; Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with an advanced degree expected.
