Traveling and exploring new places is a huge passion of mine that continues to influence my teaching. I am currently involved in the Rural Literacy Project (www.ruralliteracyproject.org) that was founded by my Cooperating Teacher and supports the growth of literacy within rural communities of Central America. Our fourth-grade students this year have been corresponding with children from Guatemala through this project, writing pen-pal letters back and forth in Spanish. Our students and their pen-pal buddies in Guatemala are also collaborating on an ABC photography book that the project hopes to publish. My Cooperating Teacher and I have recently returned from a one-week trip to San Andres, Guatemala where we delivered pen-pal letters and school supplies to students, conducted literacy workshops at the town library, and documented much of the local culture.
I was fortunate enough to also experience a one of kind journey just before I began my graduate studies. For nearly five months I "couchsurfed" my way around Europe and gained a great amount of insight that I'm pleased to be able to share with my students. I plan to pursue my love for traveling and community involvement as I continue my teaching career.
