Skills & Abilities:
Teaching Philosophy
I have been an ESL/EFL instructor/administrator for the past 28 years to a multiethnic population of students at the high school, community college and university levels. It has been my experience living and working in foreign cultures that multiethnic students require additional support, guidance and life skills. This includes not only helping these students in their academic and university environment but with personal adjustment and survival skills they need off-campus as well. I realize that it’s important for students to feel comfortable, safe, and in control of their daily activities before the learning process begins. In the classroom, I believe that the learning environment should be a haven for learners, a place where students can feel challenged and take risks with opportunities to succeed. I consider myself as a facilitator and counselor, encouraging students to reach their learning potential and guiding them so that learning is a personalized process. I feel that if the student is aware of his learning process, the content area will be more meaningful and relevant. My classes and activities are student-centered to support the students in becoming independent and critical thinkers allowing them to engage in multiple learning strategies so that all are actively engaged and producing meaningful and current materials of their own, on their own.

Having degrees in other disciplinary areas (U. S. History and Science), content-based instruction comes naturally to me. My experience in ESP gives me a unique understanding of the needs of students in content-based courses and in their career demands. I currently teach three ESP courses in the USACH EFL Teacher Training program. I also teach content-based ESP for Medicine, Math and Physical Education. Activities I incorporate to reinforce my approach to learning include; individual and group projects, technology (i.e. CALL, internet, and moodle, multimedia), authentic material, independent readings, debates and presentations. Equally important is developing basic academic skills in reading, writing, listening, note taking and analysis that will serve students beyond the classroom environment and in all walks of life.

Additional Information:
To Whom It May Concern

I presently reside in Santiago, Chile, but am in the process of moving back to the USA. In my search for the job I could make the most of my experiences, the opportunity to work as a History and/or ESL teacher is most appealing to me.

I hold a Master degree in U.S. History from the University of Utah, and have been teaching history for 24, years focusing on U.S History and Culture, but also with experience in Western and South American history. I have worked with young adults at the high school, college and university levels. I enjoy the high school age group, specifically making content interesting and fun. My experience includes teaching History, both regular and AP classes in a college preparatory high school in Utah, IB Economics at an International High School, Nido de Aguilas, in Chile and American History and Culture in content based classes at the U. of Utah and universities abroad. Working with varied student populations and academic settings in the US and abroad allows me to address the needs of students from varying backgrounds when teaching History or ESL.

I have been an ESL instructor at the University of Santiago of Chile for the past 15 years and, apart from teaching the general English classes, I also teach Methodology for future teachers of English as well as the American History and Culture classes for advanced learners. I am the editor for all English theses written at the Universidad and I advise students in all levels of the undergraduate ESL program. For the past year, and as a means to build the community outreach program at the university, I have created and hosted a radio talk show wherein I interview multinational English speakers actively involved in the Chilean society.

My goal as an educator is to focus on the learner and his/her learning process. I feel that if the student is aware of his learning process, the content area will be more meaningful and relevant. My classes and activities are student-centered supporting students in becoming independent and critical thinkers and with three main goals in mind:
Having fun
Making the material relevant
Exposing them to multiple learning strategies so that all are actively engaged and producing meaningful and current materials of their own, on their own.
Activities I include to reinforce my approach to learning include individual and group projects, online investigations, research papers, independent readings, debates and presentations. Equally important is developing basic academic skills in reading, writing, listening, note taking and analysis that will serve students beyond the classroom environment and in all walks of life. I have a temporary certification from the state of Florida for teaching Social Sciences 6-12 and am currently completing a ESL certification course with Seattle University.

Mark Perry
