Workshop   +   Leadership: governance   +   Everyone
"Students should be citizens in their schools, rather than tourists." This discussion-style presentation will focus on the success of the Youth Leadership Initiative, currently being implemented in a large, diverse, urban school district in Saint Paul, MN. The initiative is designed to assist students in developing and practicing leadership/real life skills to assist in school reform efforts. Areas to be discussed include: design, implementation, challenges, successes, curriculum development, and application in a K-12 setting. The Common Principle that "schools should model democratic practices that involve all who are directly affected by the school" will be addressed. In order for schools to effectively change, students must be a part of the process.
