Titles That Teach: Reading and Effective Writing
Facilitator(s): Natalie Morey

Roundtable   +   Classroom Practice: curriculum & instruction   +   High School
We know that reading and writing work together, but since research shows that many teenagers do not spend even five minutes a day reading, how can they possibly become better writers? More attention must be paid to selecting titles and genres that engage readers. In doing so, we can elicit greater prioritizing of reading and better writing. Science fiction (the most popular genre for teens when they do read) and biography, a leading nonfiction genre, engage students. Titles, assessment strategies, and samples of student work will be part of this discussion. We will discuss how to motivate students to read more in three ways: eliciting student reponse and connection to literature, using multicultural selections, and reading in specific genres.
