Creating Student Voice and Learning to Listen
Facilitator(s): Melissa Simones, Evan Ouellette, Erin Wing, Katy Barus, Jayson Bryant, Matt Maloney, Sarah Duchette

Workshop   +   Leadership: governance   +   High School
In this interactive workshop, participants will see summary presentations of six different programs occuring at Leavitt Area High School that enhance student voice. The principal at Leavitt, Nelson Beaudoin, was named Maine 2000 "Principal of the Year" due, in part, to his ability to engage students in developing a collaborative, caring environment. Students will present information on a variety of Leavitt's "voice-building" programs: an "open session" legislative model, a civil rights team, a peer mediation program, a challenge day diversity program, the service learning design team, and a school-wide advisory program. Participants will get an overview in a station-to-station format, followed by extensive time to meet the students, ask questions, and explore how these methods can be adapted to their situation.
