Don't Shoot the Messenger: How to Create a Class Where Students Produce Authentic Publications for the School
Facilitator(s): Judie Beidelman

Workshop   +   Classroom Practice: curriculum & instruction   +   Everyone
Students at Phillipsburg High School are "workers" actively engaged in the creation and publication of most print media circulated to the school community. Students meeting prerequisites may enroll in a class entitled "Karux Layout"; they produce the school newspaper, a newsletter sent to parents each quarter, programs for most student music and drama productions, brochures for various student programs, and myriad other items. All of this takes place with a spirit of teamwork. The students work together in a classroom without conventional homework assignments and grades. In this workshop, we will present a variety of our school publications. Participants will brainstorm the types of publications they can create for their schools and will use computers to create a sample publication.
