How Communities and Schools Can Work Together to Help ALL Students Succeed
Facilitator(s): Aimee Warthen, Amy Malick

Workshop   +   Community Connections: community as resource   +   Everyone
Today, our schools and communities are facing the complex challenge of improving student achievement. Among other things, raising achievement involves engaging diverse--and often mistrustful--communities to talk and work together on issues of race, funding, cultural differences, and school staffing. We have found that study circles can be greatly helpful in the facilitation of discussion and dialogue. We will explore how study circles help school districts to talk about education and race in a productive and respectful way; to reach out to schools, parents and the community; to build trusting relationships and partnerships; and to find workable solutions that reflect concerns and ideas from all parts of the community.
