Valuing Parents as Partners: Book Chats about Contemporary Issues
Facilitator(s): Dr. Sara Lochridge

Roundtable   +   Community Connections: parent involvement   +   High School
"Book Chats" is a program that brings parents, teachers and high school students together to discuss contemporary issues presented in the literature studied in the classroom. Written from diverse perspectives, titles of books and topics may include "Brave New World" (cloning), "The Education of Little Tree," and "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" (racial and ethnic diversity). Through this program, parents join the school conversation about current issues and can join an e-group to discuss books online. Roundtable participants should come prepared to brainstorm about novels in the curriculum that best address contemporary issues. Each participant will be given a packet summarizing the presentation and step-by-step direction for establishing their own "Book Chats" program.
