The Secondary School Literacy Project: A Reading Apprenticeship for Critical Literacy
Facilitator(s): Tony Smith, Zaretta Hammond

Workshop   +   Classroom Practice: curriculum & instruction   +   High School
Now in its third year, the Secondary School Literacy Project (SSLiP) is an example of combining critical literacy with whole system reform in the pursuit of educational equity. We have seen positive changes in student outcomes, teacher practice, school practice, and district support connected to literacy. Our guiding assumption at the outset of this project was that literacy continues to be a primary gatekeeper from educational opportunity. Using the strategic Literacy's Reading apprenticeship framework, we have worked with teachers and students to understand and develop critical literacy. In this session, participants will practice using our strategies while beginning personal inquiry into their own reading style and history.
