Small Schools for Equity's Sake: How Community Organizing is Leading the Change in Oakland and Berkeley
Facilitator(s): Victor Cary, Linda Ponce de León

Workshop   +   Community Connections: community as resource   +   Everyone
When educators and parents collaborate for school change, the results can be both transformative and sustainable. In this participatory workshop, presenters will share how BayCES and Oakland Community Organizations collaborated to develop and implement district-wide school reform. Based on lessons learned in Oakland and Berkeley, participants will unearth assumptions about relationships between schools and communities. In addition, presenters will teach basic organizing concepts, and participants will have an opportunity to practice organizing strategies that support relationships across race, class, and language. The workshop will end with participants reflecting on how to bring these new learnings back to their communities.
