What constitutes a just war? How does race affect life in America? Is there scientific knowledge we should not pursue? Our lives--and the subject areas we teach--are full of controversial, morally significant questions. But it is particularly challenging to explore such questions in public school classrooms, where such questions might raise controversy, and where pressure to "cover" material crowds out in-depth deliberation. In this workshop, participants will explore ways to integrate important moral questions into their curriculum. Participants will practice discussion-leading techniques that help students gain understanding of the gray areas in complex, controversial issues, and will explore a framework for designing units around the moral questions at the heart of the subject areas they teach. Join the EMQ electronic discussion.
Kathy has a new book on this topic, Moral Questions in the Classroom.
She will be signing copies of her book at the Fall Forum at an event called, Meet the Authors. |
