"Cornel Communities": Lifting Every Voice
Facilitator(s): Lisa Duty

Workshop   +   Classroom Practice: curriculum & instruction   +   High School
Cornel Communities are part of an emancipatory pedagogy that presents ideas and commitments for reworking schools to serve every child. In honor of the Black National Anthem, Cornel Communities seek to EXPOSE, CHALLENGE, and DECONSTRUCT the status quo by "lifting every voice." This session, inspired by Dr. Cornel West's keynote address at Fall Forum 2000, delivers to participants methods and ideas for helping students learn to facilitate their own discussions of essential questions while developing critical consciousness, building community, and taking social action. Participants will develop facets of a Cornel Community as well as grapple with the essential questions, "How does one promote critical consciousness in the absence of community? How can Cornel Communities impact student achievement and change the status quo?"
Date/Time: Friday, 8:00am - 10:00am   Room: CC 203   Session #41
