Is It Mastery or Student-Centered Learning? Can It Be Both?

Workshop   +   Curriculum & Instruction   +   High School
What happens when student work and student ideas run contrary to your carefully-considered goals for mastery? Some people think that this scenario leads to watered-down curriculum and abandoned instructional goals, but the opposite can also be true. This session will invite you to analyze a student-centered unit that asked students to research and write newsletters about the fall of the USSR, and engage in "scored discussions". Along the way, the two teachers who designed the unit frequently re-thought their project design and process, often inviting students to help them. You will see how they were able to hold firm to their original goals for mastery of content while inviting student input, and will join them in revising the project for the future.
