How a Whole School Learns Together: Developing School-Wide Projects

What happens when an entire school stops its daily activities, interrupts classes, and spends two or three days exploring essential and complex questions together? At the Institute for Collaborative Education, a CES public middle and high school in New York City, the presenters helped create special projects that involved the entire school community in studying, discussing, and addressing a complicated issue (How does a community judge the behavior of its members? Should someone who creates something be held responsible for the consequences of her creation? How does gender affect the way we interact?). In this workshop, presenters will share the process of creating the projects, and will lead participants in the first stages of planning their own. We encourage same-school teams to attend this workshop together.
