Interdisciplinary Curricula That Works: A Music and Mathematics Model

Workshop   +   Curriculum & Instruction   +   Everyone
How can interdisciplinary curricula increase learning gains for students? What are these gains, and how can they be justified when they extend beyond state and national standards? This session probes these questions from practical and theoretical standpoints. Specifically, an integrated music and mathematics curriculum based on "Functional Melodies—Finding Mathematical Relationships In Music" (authored by presenter) will be presented, discussed and conducted with the audience. An integrated mathematics and science curriculum developed by teachers at Homestead High School in Cupertino, CA, will be also be examined. Discussion of the examples will address broadening access for all students, utilizing interdisciplinary transfer to teach basic skills, meeting content coverage requirements though interdisciplinary curricula and making a case for meaningful education in a world of standardized testing.
