From Hip-Hop to Hamlet: Strategies to Develop the Voice, Skills and Habits of a Life-Long Learner

Workshop   +   Curriculum & Instruction   +   High School
Whether teaching a course on hip-hop or a unit on Hamlet, there is a tension that often arises for humanities teachers as we try to meet the curriculum goals of crafting a "serious exploration" of the material and of developing students' voices. This interactive workshop will address this tension by presenting a method of crafting activities, projects and rubrics that help students develop their skills, their voices and the habits of a life-long learner as they explore material in depth. Participants will be asked to use their multiple intelligences and their love of learning as they engage in a few of the activities from the above-mentioned curricula. Then participants and presenters will explore how to infuse other curricula with activities, projects and rubrics that develop the skills and voice of the students.
