Small Schools in Practice: Increasing Opportunities for Students

Workshop   +   Equity   +   High School
Small schools are increasingly being recognized as a vehicle for improving student performance, particularly among underserved students. This session will address the question of how getting smaller makes a difference. Participants will examine two schools from two different communities (East coast urban, West coast suburban), reflecting two different policy models (pilot schools, charter schools) and consider how each capitalizes on the flexibility afforded to small schools to better address the needs of the communities they serve. Focused roundtable discussions with staff from each school will be followed by a student panel. Concluding commentary will focus on what (and how) large schools and school systems can learn from these small school initiatives.
