Using Essential Moral Questions to Frame Courses and Class Discussions
|
| Pre-Conf + Curriculum & Instruction + Everyone |
As a nation, the culture of our classrooms is particularly adverse to serious exploration of subjects that are potentially controversial or not easily given to testing. Given the pressures of "coverage" and pressure from parents and administrators to avoid controversy, even complex, morally charged topics are often approached as chunks of information to be ingested rather than as living, complex questions to be explored. The same is true across the subject areas, wherever potential controversy looms. Participants in this day-long session will devise essential moral questions to frame coursework, discuss pitfalls of this kind of instruction, and practice strategies to conduct responsible, probing discussions around moral issues. Kathy Simon and Torrey Strohmeier are CES National staff members.
NOTE: All pre-conference events require advance registration and payment of fees in addition to the regular conference fee. |
