Urban Sanctuary: The Youth Development Network in New Mexico School Communities

Roundtable   +   Community Connections   +   High School
Theodore and Nancy Sizer's book, "The Students Are Watching", elaborates on the concept of schools as "urban sanctuaries". They also emphasize the importance of a family environment within a school. This roundtable will focus on community connections and how we can provide numerous opportunities for at-risk youth outside the realm of the classroom. Participants will discuss how to create partnerships with area schools to tackle social issues within the community. We will address a variety of avenues that can be taken to gain community and government support to finance school goals and projects. Facilitators will also share the success of Youth Development Incorporated, a collaborative effort that turned low-performing students into informed and aware academic achievers.
