The "At-Risk" Student: Priming the Portfolio Pump With Parental Involvement

Roundtable   +   Assessment   +   High School
The "at-risk" student usually arrives at the nontraditional school with the educational and personal baggage of many unsuccessful and frustrating experiences. These students, lacking participation in extracurricular activities and formal training in developing their talents, are often difficult to motivate to do quality work. Many times the parents of these students have also had negative and unsatisfying experiences with the school system. This roundtable will center on the value of exhibitions and portfolios in creating authentic venues for student work. Our central question will be "How do we integrate at-risk students and their parents into the process of more creative methods of assessment, namely exhibitions and portfolios?"
