From Conflict to Community: Counteracting the Effects of an "Argument Culture" on Inquiry-Based Learning

Roundtable   +   Curriculum & Instruction   +   High School
Participants in this thought-provoking roundtable will discuss ways to help their students become complex thinkers and effective communicators by interrupting a predominant culture of argument and establishing one of collaborative inquiry. Panelists will introduce and define the idea of the "argument culture", explain their own interest in establishing a culture of inquiry in a school at which the Socratic seminar is a mainstay, and illustrate several teaching strategies used to counteract the dominance of argument in our culture and educational system. In addition to discussing the ideas presented, participants will brainstorm further ways to promote a culture of inquiry in the classroom.
