Creating Active Citizens: Implementing a Civics Program in Your School

Roundtable   +   Community Connections   +   Everyone
Schools around the nation are abandoning the idea of required civics programs in the name of increased attention to raising student achievement solely in language arts and mathematics. Don't let this happen to your school or district! In this roundtable, we will explore the benefits of a civics program for implementing service learning, character education, and an interdisciplinary curricula in which students are encouraged to become responsible and active citizens. Participants will discover how starting a civics program in their school may be an effective way to make otherwise abstract subject areas become more meaningful through experiential and authentic learning experiences. These meaningful experiences benefit students as well as foster school and community connections.
