Freshmen and Wildlife: An Authentic, Place-Based Community Partnership

Roundtable   +   Community Connections   +   High School
Students CAN do important work with substantial, lasting impact in their community. Eighty freshmen worked with community mentors to develop a Master Management Plan for the newly-acquired Steamboat Springs State Wildlife Area. Using GPS/GIS technologies, students gathered data, organized community forums and surveys, and presented their recommendations to the Colorado Divison of Wildlife State Commissioners. Session participants will utilize a tuning protocol to examine this model of a community project based on content standards in multiple disciplines, resulting in a place-based, authentic, rigorous assessment of student knowledge and skills. Participants will consider application of this model to their educational settings.
