Four-Subject Interdisciplinary Unit: 80 Students, October Sky, Rocketry and Effective Heterogeneity

Workshop   +   Curriculum & Instruction   +   High School
The October Sky/Rocketry Unit at Souhegan High School introduced 80 ninth graders to a Coalition school. In this unit, five teachers (English, math, science, social studies and a special educator) tore down the walls, each teaching every subject, and moved students into the rigorous academic environment of high school. We asked a lot of these new high school students, but the excitement of the unit created an environment of curiosity, respect and success. Come and get materials on this unit, and to discuss the issues involved in multi-subject interdisciplinary work and benefits of such units in a heterogeneous environment.
