Equity in the Mathematics Classroom: Meeting Needs in a Heterogeneous Setting

Workshop   +   Curriculum & Instruction   +   High School
How can a heterogeneously-grouped mathematics course best address the needs of both students who struggle and those who excel? Student presenters and their teacher will share several strategies employed at Riverdale High School over the past four years in response to this question. Participants will investigate the merits of open-ended assignments, inclusive honors, timed homework and untimed tests. They will learn about and create advanced proficiency topics for use in their classrooms. Participants and presenters will discuss how these strategies, paired with creative scheduling, model CES practice with regard to individualized instruction, high expectations and honoring intellectual diversity.
