History--Who Cares? Attracting and Maintaining Student Focus

Roundtable   +   Curriculum & Instruction   +   High School
A consistent challenge facing educators today is how to involve students in relevant learning. All students can use their minds well, if they identify a reason to do so. Teachers are often forced to cover the content in preparation for standardized testing, and consequently minimize the importance of encouraging the student's role as learner. This roundtable will engage participants in conversation about methods to inspire students to use their minds well in making connections between the past and present. The presenters will share and distribute proven activities, simulation games, lesson plans and actual student exhibitions. Topics for discussion will include successes and failures in developing essential questions, journal entries, Socratic Seminars, and portfolios to facilitate student understanding about the relevance of history in their lives.
