Advisory All Day Long

Workshop   +   Curriculum & Instruction   +   High School
Many Coalition schools use advisories to build community and provide students with a close one-on-one relationship with an adult. The Met School, based here in Providence, takes that idea and those goals to the next level: the school design places advisories, rathers than classes, at the core of teaching, learning, and community building. Each advisor works with 13 students, following them for all four years of high school. Working with family members and the student, the advisor creates a personalized learning plan that incorporates the student's interests and targets needed learning areas. In this session, advisors, students, and parents from the Met School will discuss the all-day advisory model and share the educational and social merits of such small-group, personalized learning communities.
