2. New Issue of Horace
CES is proud to announce the release of the next issue of Horace, "Sustained School Partnerships: Mentoring, Collaboration, and Networks." This issue of Horace looks at how sustained mentorships and partnerships help new and restructuring schools draw on the experience of long-established Coalition schools to develop practices that best support personalized, challenging teaching and learning.
The issue also includes:
- "Our Schools Have So Much to Offer Each Other: Strategies and Structures for Effective School Visits." A focus on school visits, with practical information about transforming brief encounters into important learning for visitors and host schools.
- A preview of CES ChangeLab: A sneak preview of a new Web site dedicated to sharing exemplary CES practices from the CES Mentor Schools.
- Annotated resources: Schools Learning from Each Other - Ten places to go for more about sustained school collaborations and school visit programs.
Horace 20.1 will be mailed to subscribers and CES affiliates in early November 2003, and will be distributed at Fall Forum. If you're not already a CES affiliate or subscriber and want to get your hands on this issue, please join us! 3. Ohio Principal Named Middle School Principal of the Year
Doug Lowery, principal of Hilliard Memorial Middle School in Hilliard, Ohio, was named the 2004 MetLife/NASSP National Middle Level Principal of the Year. A long-time advocate of CES and the Common Principles, Lowery received the award for demonstrating excellence in resolving complex problems, involving the local community in the life of the school, and his consistent success in improving Hilliard Memorial's overall learning environment. Congratulations to Doug! For more information, visit http://www.principals.org/advocacy/pr_poy_lowery091903.cfm.
4. First Amendment Schools Network Seeking Affiliates
This fall, the First Amendment Schools Network is inviting schools across the country to take advantage of a new opportunity to get involved in First Amendment education. In March 2001, the First Amendment Center and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) teamed up to launch First Amendment Schools: Educating for Freedom and Responsibility (FAS), a national initiative designed to help schools affirm First Amendment principles and put them into action throughout their communities. Now ASCD and the First Amendment Center have announced a more immediate way for schools to get involved in the work of FAS - the First Amendment Affiliate Schools Program.
The FAS Affiliate Program encourages all K-12 public and private schools to begin working toward becoming models of democratic freedom, and provides key resources to help them in their work. Affiliate schools agree to commit to the four principles of the FAS Vision Statement:
· Create Laboratories of Democratic Freedom Forum;
· Commit to Inalienable Rights and Civic Responsibility;
· Include All Stakeholders; and
· Translate Civic Education into Community Engagement.
As Affiliate Schools work to implement these principles, they share their successes and challenges with other schools in the FAS Network. Most importantly, FAS Affiliate Schools also receive the following free services and benefits:
· Subscriptions to the weekly electronic newsletter, First Amendment School News;
· Access to the FAS Network Web Board, where schools meet on-line to share their questions and ideas;
· Invitations to conferences on democratic education and the First Amendment;
· Copies of the latest resources relating to First Amendment issues in schools;
· Opportunities to apply for mini-grants to support best practices built upon First Amendment principles; and
· Eligibility for the three-year Project School grant to support whole-school reform efforts.
To learn more about the program or for Affiliate School information and applications, visit the FAS website, www.firstamendmentschools.org.
