1. Call for Letters of Intent: New Small CES High School Grant
The CES Small Schools Project is pleased to announce that the Request for Letters of Intent for new small high school grants is now available at http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/about/org/gates_pr.html.
Design teams that are interested in applying for a CES new school grant need to submit a letter of intent to apply by February 2, 2004. Based on these letters, along with the goals and strategic objectives of the CES Small Schools Project, selected teams will be invited to submit a full application to CES.
Each team awarded a grant will work closely with a CES Mentor School and will have a year of planning prior to opening. In addition to participating in professional development and planning activities defined by the team's mentor school, teams will participate in several national network events hosted by CES, including an annual summer institute co-facilitated by educators from the mentor schools.
For more information about CES, the Small Schools Project and CES's Mentor Schools, or to read CES's Common Principles and school benchmark document, please visit our website: www.essentialschools.org.
If you have specific questions about the new small high school RFI, contact Laura Flaxman at lflaxman@essentialschools.org.
2. BayCES 2004 Small Schools Symposium
The Bay Area Coalition for Equitable Schools (BayCES) invites you to join them at their 2004 Small Schools Symposium (formerly the Small Schools Conference), entitled "Teaching and Learning in Small Schools: Working Toward Equity and Excellence in Small Schools." The symposium will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at McClymonds High School in Oakland, California.
Join educators and community members from throughout the Bay Area to: - Explore what effective teaching and learning in small schools should look like. - Gather tools and strategies to take back to your classroom, school, and community. - Celebrate successes of the ever-growing small schools movement.
For more information, visit the BayCES website: http://www.bayces.org/programs_services/smallschoolssymposium.htm or contact BayCES at smallschools@bayces.org, or at 510-208-0160 x 377. Workshop information and registration will be available online in January.
3. Opportunity for Teachers Interested in Advanced Degrees in Education
The Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT) is seeking talented African-American, Latino/a, or Native American teachers in their early years of teaching at Coalition schools to participate in its Associate Program. The IRT Associate Program recruits outstanding African-American, Latino/a, and Native American students and encourages them to pursue advanced degrees and careers in teaching with the intent of increasing the number of underrepresented faculty members at the elementary, secondary, and college levels.
IRT Associates are offered extensive counseling and assistance as they apply to graduate programs at a consortium of the country's top universities. This consortium has pledged to recruit IRT Associates and seek financial aid for qualified applicants. In addition, graduate school application fees are waived for IRT Associates, saving them at least $600 in fees.
IRT is particularly interested in recruiting applicants associated with CES, both young teachers in CES schools and junior-level employees from CES regional centers who have plans to pursue masters and doctoral degrees. Applicants must be African-American, Latino/a, or Native American; have at least a 3.2 GPA; and be considering seriously a teaching career at the elementary, high school, college, or university level. IRT will do major recruiting from January through May and may make recruitment visits to the following cities where there is CES activity: New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dayton, and Chicago. The program has a rolling admission policy, but all associates must have submitted their application materials to the program prior to May 1.
Any prospective applicants who would be interested in attending an informational meeting on the program in the aforementioned cities, please indicate your interest by contacting Brett Bradshaw at CES National, bbradshaw@essentialschools.org or 510-433-1926.
For more information on the IRT, please visit their website, http://www.andover.edu/irt/home.htm.
