1. Fall Forum 2004

Join us for the CES Fall Forum 2004 — Equitable Schools for a New Democracy
November 11-13, San Francisco, California
San Francisco Marriott Hotel

Celebrate the Coalition of Essential Schools' 20th anniversary! Join educators, parents, students, and leading thinkers in education to exchange ideas, ask questions, and share insights from schools around the world. This year, we focus on creating a system of schools in which students of all races, classes, and backgrounds achieve their full potential, gain the skills they need, and develop a passion for contributing to an active democracy. The keynote speaker will be Lani Guinier, civil rights advocate and Professor of Law at Harvard University.

For more details, visit: www.essentialschools.org. Conference registration will open in early September.

2. Affiliate with CES National

As the current affiliation year comes to a close, we hope you and your schools will choose to join the CES National network for the 2004-05 affiliation year, which begins on August 1. To become a 2004-05 CES National Affiliate, schools must complete or update the school profile on the CES Web site and pay the affiliation fee of $500. Individuals who are NOT ASSOCIATED WITH A SCHOOL OR REGIONAL CENTER may affiliate as a CES National Affiliate Friend. The affiliation fee for Friends is $75.

CES National's affiliation program encourages schools and individuals to indicate their commitment to the CES Common Principles and to express their support for goals of the national network. In exchange, CES National provides benefits and resources to those that are doing the hard work of CES reform. To learn more about the benefits and requirements of affiliation, please visit, http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/schools/affil/overview.html.

3. Update on CES Takes a Stand Initiative

Over eight hundred people from across the CES Network have signed our petition stating their opposition to the use of high-stakes standardized tests for decisions about advancement or graduation. We're thrilled with this outpouring of support! If you haven't had a chance to sign the petition, please do so, and don't forget to forward "CES Takes a Stand" to your personal network of friends and colleagues.

See http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/about/org/HST_statement.html for the full statement, the petition, related resources, an action kit, and more.

4. CES National Affiliate Newsletter

Help CES National celebrate your achievements in its new quarterly newsletter!
CES National's inaugural printed network newsletter is coming this September, and we want to hear from you. What achievements or fabulous happenings have occurred recently at your school or CES regional office — news that you'd like to share with CES affiliates nationwide? Do you have exciting information regarding new staff, grants, or upcoming events that the network should know about? If so, please contact Reino Makkonen at CES National, rmakkonen@essentialschools.org or 510-433-1452, and tell him all about it. And stay tuned for further updates!

5. Upcoming Issue of Horace - Are Advisories Essential?

Horace 20.4 is scheduled for release in September to greet the new academic year. We're focusing on advisories: how they build community in a school, how to design and sustain advisories so that they're apart of the school's academic core, the challenges they present to hiring and retaining staff, the opportunities they present for personalization and deeper connection, and more.

If you have questions about advisories, experience and wisdom to share, stories you want to tell, or challenges that need to be addressed, please drop a note to Jill Davidson, Horace's editor, at jdavidson@essentialschools.org. As always, this Horace will be centered on the concerns and wisdom of the CES Network; your contributions and generosity make this possible. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

6. Update on the CES Small Schools Project

In May, CES National announced the first group of new small schools and large school conversions in the "CES Small Schools Project," a five-year initiative, made possible by an $18.7 million grant awarded in September of 2003 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The first new small schools are:
Civitas (Los Angeles, CA),
Humanities Preparatory Academy 2 (New York, NY),
Lighthouse Community Charter School (Oakland, CA),
Metro School (Columbus, OH), and
High School for Student and Community Empowerment (Houston, TX).

The first large school conversions are:
Leominster High School (Leominster, MA), and
Tyee High School (Seatac, WA).

Stay tuned for future announcements related to this exciting project.

Closing the Achievement Gap Workshop
August 18, 2004, 9 a.m. — 3 p.m.

Workshops are intended for grade levels K-12 and will focus on research-based strategies and support systems for meeting individual student needs in order to close the "achievement gap." Participants will engage in simulations and hands-on activities in order to gain a deeper understanding of personalized teaching/learning. The suggested audience includes regular and special education teachers, administrators, home/school educators and staff in after school programs.

This highly interactive seminar will be conducted in small, personalized groups. Experienced CFG coaches from NSRF's national network will lead and model the protocols used in CFGs customized to the needs of the group. The majority of time will be spent examining participants' student work samples. Participants will learn to use probing questions that push reflective thinking and to look at professional practice. Participants are required to bring a sample of student work or a dilemma that they are facing.

Registration: $800.00 per person or $750.00 per person if three or more attending, payable by check or purchase order (includes breakfast, lunch and materials.)

Introduction to the National Board Certification Process and CFGs Session
July 22, 2004, 9 a.m. — 3 p.m.

National Board Certification is a reflective process of professional development. Critical Friends Groups, or CFGs, came out of the Annenberg Grant and the National School Reform Faculty. It, too, is a reflective process of looking at professional practice, student work, and equity. Using CFG protocols can help in the process of working toward National Board Certification. Participants in this one-day highly interactive workshop will learn about the certification process and what is involved in preparing the ten-part portfolio, including preparing the following: videotapes, student lessons, work samples, and content-area knowledge tests. We will take a look at the five core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and where to get further assistance.

Registration: Free!

For more information on these and other programs, visit the Center for Effective School Practices Web site at http://cesp.rutgers.edu/ or call 732-564-9100.
