1. Fall Forum Summary

Over 2000 teachers, administrators, parents, students, and leading thinkers in education gathered in San Francisco, CA, for Fall Forum 2004, "Equitable School for a New Democracy”. Please join us in Boston, MA for Fall Forum 2006!

2. Contribute to the Next Issue of In Common

Help CES National celebrate your achievements in its quarterly newsletter, In Common!

CES National's second edition network newsletter, In Common is coming this January, and we want to hear from you. What achievements or fabulous happenings have occurred recently at your school or CES regional office — news that you'd like to share with CES affiliates nationwide? Do you have exciting information regarding new staff, grants, or upcoming events that the network should know about?

In addition we are looking for CES students, staff, and community members to submit letters, essays or reflections on their experiences in CES schools across the country. These submissions should be between 500 and 700 words and must be received by December 21st. Please send all submissions, inquiries, and comments to Abbey Kerins at CES National, mailto:akerins@essentialschools.org or 510-433-1925. And stay tuned for further updates!

3. Call for Letters of Intent for New and Conversion Planning Grants

CES national seeks letters of inter for new small high school and large school conversion planning grants.

The Coalition of Essential Schools Small Schools Project, a five-year initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, seeks to enhance the character, quality, and sustainability of small schools while spurring broader change in the public education system. The project involves the creation of 10 new CES public high schools, the conversion of five existing large high schools into small schools, the formation of a network of 20 "mentor schools" and the launch of CES ChangeLab, a web site with behind-the-scenes access to the tools and strategies of the CES Mentor Schools.

Large High School Conversion Planning Grant RFI
We invite letters of intent from the following types of teams: large public high schools (maximum of student population of 1500) that wish to transform themselves into several small schools (each with a maximum population of 400), working in partnership with a regional CES center or similar intermediary organization guided by CES principles; or teams that include a school already named as a CES Mentor School or Emerging CES Mentor School as a partner in supporting the transformation of the large high school. Interested teams should be aware that this grant seeks to support the conversion of large schools into small autonomous schools, rather than small learning communities. Teams that receive planning grants will be eligible for two-year implementation grants following the first year of planning.

For more information on large high school conversion RFI contact Lisette López at llopez@essentialschools.org.

New Small High School Planning Grant RFI
We invite letters of intent from new small school teams who are interested in initiating the planning phase for designing a new small public high school, working in partnership with a CES Mentor School. The new school and Mentor School team will work together over the course of a year, including but not limited to professional development and planning activities hosted by CES National, to design a small high school with a maximum student population of 400 to open in the fall of 2006. Teams that receive planning grants will be eligible for two-year implementation grants following the first year of planning.

4. CES Founders Launch Educational Policy Think Tank

Ted Sizer and Deborah Meier, along with other school reformers who are familiar to CES members, have launched a new educational policy group called The Forum for Education and Democracy. The stated agenda of the group is to promote a friendlier public policy environment for progressive schools. The Forum’s recent publication, “Many Children Left Behind” offers a deeply critical look at how the No Child Left Behind Act “punishes rather than helps poor and minority kids” and is an essential guide to understanding where we go from here. Through their web site, policy papers, editorials, and work with other organizations The Forum promotes ‘strong public schools for a strong democracy.’ Joining Ted and Deborah in launching The Forum are Larry Myatt, John Goodland, Linda Darling-Hammond, Judith Browne, Wendy Puriefoy, Carl Glickman, Nancy Sizer, Pedro Noguera, Angela Valenzuela and George Wood who directs the work of the Forum. To find out more and to get on their mailing list, visit their web site at www.forumforeducation.org.

5. Horace Seeks Stories and Ads from the Network
Advertise in Horace: Get your message out to the CES Network!

Horace, the journal of the Coalition of Essential Schools, is accepting advertisements from organizations that serve CES educators, students, and communities. The deadline for the Winter 2005 issue is January 14, 2005; additional 2005 issues will be available in May and September. Contribute to Horace
The Winter 2005 issue of Horace will focus on inclusion of students with disabilities in Essential schools. Horace editor Jill Davidson is looking for stories from schools that have created powerful learning experiences for all students through combining inclusive practices with the ten Common Principles. Please email Jill at jdavidson@essentialschools.org with your thoughts and ideas!

6. Test-drive the New CES ChangeLab Website

CES ChangeLab, a behind the scenes look at some of the best schools in the country, is in the final stages of development and quality assurance testing. We received a lot of positive feedback from our demo at Fall Forum. As part of the “soft-launch”, we would love to hear more before the official launch on January 15th. Site visitors are invited to both experience the ChangeLab demo as well as explore the site on their own. With this feedback, we will continue to refine the site over the next two months, making any necessary changes to the resource submission system, upgrading the discussion groups, and completing the school tours. In addition, we will continue to work with CES Mentor Schools to populate the site with proven resources in the CES focus areas.

To participate in the soft-launch usability testing, email Shilpa Sood at ssood@essentialschools.org with your name, email address, and organization name.
