1. NEW YORK REGENTS ACTION UPDATE

CES National recently launched an effort to mobilize our network to persuade the New York State Board of Regents to support a performance-based system of assessment and to grant our schools in New York a waiver from the full battery of state high-stakes standardized tests. To date, over 600 people from 40 states and five countries have sent emails to the New York Regents and the Chair of the Education Committee of the New York State Assembly. If you haven’t had a chance to join this effort, please do so now, and don’t forget to forward the request to your personal network of friends and colleagues.

2. SMALLS SCHOOLS PROJECT KICKS IT UP A NOTCH!

MENTOR SCHOOLS
Now in its third year, the Mentor School Network has developed a substantial list of workshops, institutes, and laboratories to share innovations and improve classroom practice across the broader CES network. These events will take place in various parts of the country, from Los Angeles to Stewart, OH. CES National will issue a Small Schools Project Professional Development Guide that summarizes course descriptions, provides contact information, and outlines registration fees, with discounted rates for CES National affiliates. The completed hard-copy guide will be sent to each nationally affiliated school and center.

SSP SUMMER INSTITUTE
We are also proud to announce the CES Small Schools Project Summer Institute co-hosted by CES Northwest. The institute will be held July 11-15, 2005, in Tacoma, Washington.
The Institute will be open to those interested in creating new small schools and converting large high schools from the Seattle area as well as from across the country. It will feature workshops, discussions, planning time, and consultancies with the CES Mentor Schools and members of the CES Small Schools Project. Registration will open in March. 3. CES CENTER EVENTS

The following professional development opportunities are available this spring through CES Centers:

CES Northwest Holds 13th Annual Symposium
Registration is now open for the annual CES Northwest Symposium, entitled “How Students Learn.” This year students, teachers, and support organizations will focus on the implementation of the CES Common Principles. Through a unique format, including workshops, panel presentations, equity discussions, and a student summit, participants will engage in a deep dialogue and exchange successful practices. The Symposium will be held on Saturday, March 5th. Please be sure to register before the deadline of Friday, February 25th. The Southern Maine Partnership Announces Their 2nd Annual Spring Forum
This year’s forum, entitled “A Promising Future for Maine: Preparing Students for College, Work, and Citizenship,” will bring together middle and high school educators and students, as well as leading experts from across Maine to exchange ideas, ask questions, and share insights. The forum will be organized around the following four strands: classroom practice, leadership, citizenship, and partnerships. This event is jointly sponsored by the Great Maine Schools Project at the Mitchell Institute, the Southern Maine Partnership at the University of Southern Maine, and the Center for Inquiry on Secondary Education at the Maine Department of Education. The event will be help at the Eastland Park Hotel, Portland, Maine from March 31 through April 2, 2005.

CCE Boston Spring Forum
The Center for Collaborative Education in Boston will be hosting its Spring Forum, "Principles in Action: Working Together for Equity and High Student Achievement." The focus of this year's forum will be on how the Common Principles help shape and guide the approaches used to create effective small schools or learning communities where all students have a chance to achieve at high levels.

On March 10, the Forum will offer a day of visits to some of Boston's most effective small schools. In the evening, Ted Sizer will speak and students will perform at our reception held at the Museum of Science.

On March 11, Dr. Sonia Nieto will be the Keynote Speaker for our day of professional sharing. Educators from our network schools and from CCE will be offering workshops and roundtables at Wheelock College in Boston.

4. IN COMMON CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The building of a 25-foot catapult, the creation of a student-lead foundation, and a list of almost 50 new affiliates were among some of the many fantastic achievements celebrated in the last issue of In Common.

Now it’s your chance to join in the celebration.

In Common is the primary vehicle for CES affiliates to communicate their successes, reflections, and events to our growing national network. It is essential that affiliates take time to participate. Write up a little something about your staff, students, grants, workshops, or achievements, and take part in the national dialogue about issue of importance to CES.

There are two different ways to participate:
1. Submit a news item (between 50-80 words for CES schools and 100-150 words for CES centers). Submissions for In Common news items are due March 21st.
2. Submit an article or essay. These longer pieces should be between 500-700 words, and can focus on a wide range of topics (e.g. a reflection on one’s first year of teaching or a detailed account of a project-based learning activity). Submissions for In Common essays are due March 14th.

5. ASK A MENTOR ON CHANGELAB

Participate in the first “Ask a Mentor” Session hosted on CES ChangeLab! “Ask a Mentor” panels virtually convene educators from across the network to discuss specific topics and to learn from the experience of CES school leaders. Next month’s panel will be focused on Authentic Pedagogy and will be hosted by Dr. Lawrence Kohn, Principal of Quest High School, in Humble, Texas.

The panel will be open from March 7-11, and you have the opportunity to pose questions that will be answered over the course of several days. Or, if you don’t have a specific question to ask, we invite you to log on to find out what everyone else is inquiring about!

6. COMING UP IN HORACE!

In March, Horace will focus on inclusive classrooms in Essential schools, examining the ways that inclusion for students with disabilities improves and challenges teaching and learning for all.

In May, Horace documents examples of district-level leadership for Essential school change. We're actively collecting stories, information, and suggestions for this issue. If you are interested in contributing an article or have a great story to tell about district-level leadership, please contact Horace's editor Jill Davidson at jdavidson@essentialschools.org by March 7.
