1. CES SMALL SCHOOLS PROJECT SUMMER INSTITUTE

Registration is now open for the 2005 CES Small Schools Project Summer Institute, “The Essentials of Small Schools: Principles and Practices for Equity & Achievement.” Jointly hosted by CES National and CES Northwest, the Summer Institute will take place at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA, July 11-15, 2005. This institute includes workshops, discussion groups, and facilitated planning time organized around the following essential question: How do we design and continuously improve schools that support powerful instruction and success for all students?

Workshops and roundtables will be led by CES Mentor Schools, including Urban Academy, Eagle Rock School, Boston Arts Academy, Quest High School, Fenway High School, Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School, and Federal Hocking High School. Presenters and speakers include some of the most effective and renowned small school educators in the country. 2. ANNOUNCING FALL FORUM 2005

Fall Forum 2005 will be held in Boston, Massachusetts, November 3-5, at the Boston Marriott Copley Place Hotel. This year's theme is "Reclaiming the Freedom to Learn."

Join educators, parents, students, and other leading thinkers in education at the CES annual conference to exchange ideas, ask questions, and share insights from schools around the world. This year we focus on creating schools that equip all students with the knowledge and skills to make the most of their lives and get a fair start on a promising future. Look for the Call for Proposals for conference sessions to be distributed in mid-May. Applications will be accepted from mid-May through mid-June. Conference registration will open in late August. To learn more about Fall Forum, visit: http://www.essentialschools.org.

5. CES ESSENTIAL VISIONS ON ITS WAY

Formerly known as the CES Principles Video Project, CES Essential Visions is a series of multimedia DVDs that bring the CES Common Principles to life with real stories and tools from today’s most successful small schools. Each DVD captures how the Common Principles have been implemented in classrooms, illustrating how students engage in their education and teachers develop as professionals. Focused segments provide unique perspectives on the benefits and challenges of each principle, while lesson plans and student work samples give educators the tools they need to drive improvement.

Shooting for the first CES Essential Visions DVD wrapped at School of the Future in New York City on March 25, and at Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School in Devens, MA, earlier in the year. A special thanks to the school communities at Parker and School of the Future for participating in the project’s inaugural year and warmly welcoming the video crew.

See how Parker and School of the Future implement “less is more,” “depth over coverage,” and “student as worker, teacher as coach” when the first DVD is released this September.

6. NEW POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR TRANSFORMING HIGH SCHOOLS

The National High School Alliance, a partnership of over forty organizations including CES, has just released A Call to Action: Transforming High School for All Youth, a framework of six core principles and recommended strategies for preparing all of our nation's youth for college, careers, and active civic participation. A Call To Action provides leaders at the national, state, district, school, and community levels with a common framework for building public will, developing supportive policies, and actually implementing the practices needed to radically change the traditional, factory-model high school that tracks and sorts students. The National High School Alliance spent the past two years tapping the expertise of its partners, resulting in a report that identifies what it takes to transform high schools that produce high academic achievement, close the achievement gap, and promote civic and personal growth among all high-school-age youth.

If you are looking for a policy tool to build a case with leaders and stakeholders at the local and regional levels for your high-school reform work, you may want to use it or forward it to those who could benefit from reading it. To download a copy of the report or a two-page graphic that summarizes the recommendations, visit the National High School Alliance website: http://www.hsalliance.org.

7. MULTIPLE MEASURES APPROACHES TO HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION
The School Redesign Network at Stanford University (SRN) has released a new report examining how the design of high school graduation policies can have important consequences for teaching, learning, and student attainment. Multiple Measures Approaches to High School Graduation documents research findings on states that have required exit examinations as the primary basis for graduation from high school. The report concludes that for states and districts, a multiple measures approach to high school graduation offers a more balanced and informative platform for holding students and schools accountable.
To download a copy of the report, the executive summary, a research brief, or to purchase print copies of the report, visit the SRN website: http://www.schoolredesign.net/srn/mm/mm.php.

8. NEW WEB RESOURCES ON NCLB AND EDUCATION POLICY

The Civil Society Institute recently launched www.NCLBgrassroots.org, a website to monitor how communities across the nation are meeting the challenges of the No Child Left Behind Act, the far-reaching federal law on K-12 education.

The goal of www.NCLBgrassroots.org is to capture the growing concern that NCLB's implementation, with its emphasis on labeling schools as failures, undermines children's learning and weakens local control of schools. The site tracks news articles from every state on how their communities are faring under the No Child Left Behind Act and highlights articles on some of the law's key controversial issues, including the Federal role in Education Policy, the Narrowing of Curriculum, Teacher Flexibility, Class Size, Funding Burden, and Standardized Tests.

Also, the Forum for Education and Democracy has updated its website with new resources and programs dedicated to promoting strong schools for a strong democracy. The new site features interesting articles, books, links to websites, and other resources that support the progressive, democratic mission of public education. To find out more and to download resources, visit: http://www.forumforeducation.org.

The Forum for Education and Democracy is devoted to supporting educational policies and practices that prepare the young for a life of active and engaged citizenship. It is convened by leaders in the fields of school reform and educational policy, including Ted Sizer, Deborah Meier, George Wood, and Larry Myatt, among others.
