1. CES SMALL SCHOOLS SUMMER INSTITUTE

Registration is now open for the 2006 CES Small Schools Summer Institute, “The Essentials of Small Schools: Principles and Practices for Equity & Achievement.” The Institute, hosted in collaboration with the Colorado Children’s Campaign, Eagle Rock School, and PEBC, will take place at the Four Points by Sheraton Denver Southeast in Denver, Colorado, July 10-14, 2006. This institute will include workshops, discussion groups, and facilitated planning time organized around the essential question: How do we design and continuously improve schools that support powerful instruction and success for all students?

Presenters and speakers include some of the most effective, renowned small school educators in the country. Participation is open to individuals and teams of educators interested in small high school design. The Institute will provide powerful professional development for large high school teams interested in converting to small schools, as well as teams creating or improving new small schools.

2. AFFILIATE WITH CES NATIONAL EARLY AND SAVE!

It’s time to establish or renew your affiliation with the CES network for the 2006-07 year, which begins on August 1. Schools, centers, and organizations that affiliate before June 30th can save $50 off the regular affiliation fee of $500. To become a 2006-07 CES National Affiliate, schools and organizations must complete or update (if necessary) their profiles on the CES Web site and pay the early-bird affiliation fee of $450 by June 30th ($500 if after June 30th).

If you’re not associated with a school, center, district, or organization, you can affiliate too! To become an Individual Affiliate, or to renew your status, please create or update your profile on the CES Web site and pay the annual affiliation fee of $75.

Remember, in order to register for the Fall Forum or other CES conferences/institutes at affiliate rates or to claim fee waivers, you or your school/organization must be affiliated and have paid dues by the time you register. To take advantage of these registration discounts, we recommend that you complete or renew your affiliation by August 15, 2006.

To join or renew your affiliation, please visit: http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/schools/affil/join_renew.html

3. MAY IS NATIONAL EXHIBITION MONTH

Join CES in a nation-wide campaign to promote and celebrate exhibitions as a preferred form of student assessment. The campaign is part of the first ever “National Exhibition Month,” designated as the month of May for 2006. Throughout May, schools across the country will engage in activities that highlight exhibitions and showcase student work and achievements. Whether documenting how exhibitions are done, writing a letter to the editor of your local paper, or hosting a public event at your school around exhibitions, we encourage you to find a way to participate that is both realistic and engaging.

For more information, suggestions on how you can participate, to view CES resources on exhibitions, or to download support materials, including guidelines for creating a local event and an advocacy action kit, please visit:

4. ANNOUNCING FALL FORUM 2006

Fall Forum 2006 will be held in Chicago, Illinois, November 2-4, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. This year's theme is "Many Voices, Common Principles: The Power to Transform."

Join educators, students, parents, and other leading thinkers in education for the 20th annual Fall Forum! This year, we recognize the principles that we hold in common and focus on adding voices to a movement that works to transform schools into high-achieving and equitable places of learning that are connected to their communities.

Look for the Call for Proposals for conference sessions to be distributed in mid-May. Applications will be accepted from mid-May through mid-June. Conference registration will open in mid-August. To learn more about Fall Forum, visit: http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/fforum/fforum.html

5. ESSENTIAL BLOG

A post this week on the Essential Blog (http://www.essentialblog.org) asks readers to answer some actual or potential SAT questions. We invite you to visit the site, take these questions, share your thoughts, and reflect on the role of the SAT—and standardized tests in general—in our society.

6. CONTRIBUTE TO IN COMMON

Do you have news you want to share with the CES Network? Here’s your chance!
We are now accepting submissions for the next issue of In Common, the CES affiliate newsletter.

In Common is the primary vehicle for CES affiliates to communicate their successes, reflections, and events to our growing national network. It is essential that affiliates take time to participate. Write up a little something about your staff, students, grants, workshops, or achievements, and take part in the national dialogue about issues of importance to CES.

To submit, please email a news item (between 50-80 words) or an article/essay (between 500-700 words) to Gwenyth Shears, Membership Coordinator, at gshears@essentialschools.org.
The deadline for submissions is May 5, 2006.

8. CES JOINS STAND UP CAMPAIGN

Amid mounting national concern over the state of America’s high schools, CES has joined a national campaign calling on all Americans to demand excellent high schools that prepare every student for college, work, and citizenship. STAND UP is a national, multi-year community-based campaign that calls for excellent high schools that prepare all students for future success. Comprised of more than 50 organizations throughout the country, the effort is committed to enlisting the support of the American people in tackling America’s education crisis.

The multi-pronged effort will include print and television advertising, a website with resources for parents and concerned citizens to become engaged in education improvement efforts, and local campaign events around the country.
