1. FALL FORUM 2007 RECAP!
Thanks to so many of you who joined us at Fall Forum in Denver last week! The buzz in the network is that this was one of the most energizing, focusing, and practically useful Fall Forums in CES history. For those of you who joined us at Fall Forum, and for those of you who weren't able to make it, live the experience again or for the first time with our Fall Forum recap at http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/fforum/fforum.html. And it's not too early to start to plan for next year! CES will bring Fall Forum to Charlotte, North Carolina, November 6-8, 2008.

-------------------------------------------------------

2. NEW SMALL SCHOOLS LAUNCHING IN 2007
The next generation of CES schools is here! This past fall, three new high schools launched through the CES Small Schools Network opened their doors. These three schools, new small schools created from the ground up, will join over 35 other exemplary schools in the CES Small Schools Network and will continue to receive mentoring and ongoing professional development to support their growth and success.

The following are new small schools launched in 2007:
* ARISE (Oakland, CA), http://www.arisehighschool.org
* CIVITAS School of Leadership (Los Angeles, CA)
* Gotham Professional Arts Academy (New York, NY)

For more information on these schools and the Small Schools Project, visit http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/ssp/ssp.html.

4. HORACE: CURRENT ISSUE, AND WHAT'S COMING UP IN 2008
CES has released Horace Volume 23, Number 4, "Beyond Reform: Transformations,"featuring reports from the CES network on interrupting the status quo and creating the conditions for transformed schools and school systems. With a report on Los Angeles’ emerging Belmont Zone of Choice, reflections from the Bay Area Coalition for Equitable Schools by new BayCES director, LaShawn Routé Chatmon, a report on the transformational effects of coaching in two Michigan elementary schools by Shug Brandell of the Michigan Coalition of Essential Schools, an analysis of district change from the staff of CES Northwest, and teacher and student reports from SeaTac, Washingon’s Academy for Citizenship and Empowerment, the issue’s first-hand accounts reframe and redefine transformation and provide evidence of how a focus on the Common Principles can leverage system-wide change.

Current affiliates and subscribers, look for "Beyond Reform: Transformations" at your schools and in your mailboxes. If you don't receive Horace, you can change that! Affiliate with CES to ensure the regular connection with the CES network that you need to create education transformations that benefit all young people and their communities. For a link to affiliation, visit the CES website at http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/schools/affil/overview2.html.

And stay tuned! We will be posting our Call for Submissions for the four 2008 issues of Horace early next week on the CES website at http://www.essentialschools.org/horace. Horace has transformed over the years to reflect CES as a national professional learning community, with contributions coming directly from educators, coaches, and leaders. Horace is your forum and requires your ideas and initiative. If you want to share your work with the CES network and beyond, please contact Horace editor Jill Davidson at jdavidson@essentialschools.org.

-------------------------------------------------------

5. IN COMMON CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Do you have news for the CES network? Share it in the CES affiliate newsletter In Common! In Common is the primary vehicle for CES affiliates to communicate successes, reflections, and events to our growing national network. Take part in the national CES dialogue and tell the network what's going on at your school, school district, or organization. There are two ways to contribute:
1. Submit a short news item, no more than 100 words, on what's happening in your school community or affiliated organization.
2. Submit an article or essay between 500-700 words.

Submissions are welcome at any time and are due for the next issue by January 25, 2008. Please send all submissions, inquiries, and comments to Ramon Calhoun, rcalhoun@essentialschools.org, or call 510-433-1924.

6. SIZER SCHOLAR APPLICATION DEADLINE
The goals of the Theodore R. Sizer Dissertation Scholars Program are: (1) to stimulate research on CES schools and practice; (2) to increase our understanding of the effectiveness of the ten Common Principles and CES practice; and (3) to encourage a new generation of scholars and educational researchers to examine the CES philosophy. Researchers of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

CES National invites dissertation proposals that examine the implementation and effectiveness of CES practices and CES schools. Dissertation Grants are available for doctoral students writing their dissertation proposal or before conducting their research. Applicants must be candidates for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States. CES National will provide up to five awards of $2,000-$4,000 each. In addition to the grant, award winners will receive a stipend to attend and present their research at CES's annual Fall Forum. Dissertation grantees' final reports may either be an article of a quality and in a format suitable for publication in a scholarly journal or a copy of the dissertation.

Dissertation topics may cover a wide range of practice-related issues that include but are not limited to: evidence of effectiveness; teachers and teaching; student voice; policies and practices related to student achievement and assessment; policies and practices that influence student and parental attitudes; contextual factors (individual, curricular, and school related) in education; at-risk students; and school resources and finance.

The deadline for the next rounds of grants is December 1, 2007. For more information, please visit http://www.essentialschools.org/pub/ces_docs/about/org/DSP_cfp.html or contact Director of Research Jay Feldman at jfeldman@essentialschools.org or 510-433-1914.

-------------------------------------------------------

7. ASK A MENTOR PANEL – ESSENTIAL MATHEMATICS, DECEMBER 5-7
Ask-a-Mentor is your chance to ask questions and receive answers from teachers and administrators from across the CES Network. This exchange is designed to facilitate collaboration and the sharing of best practices amongst CES schools and community members. Ask-a-Mentor can be found online at www.ceschangelab.org.

In the Essential Mathematics Ask-A-Mentor panel, which happens December 5-7, Changelab members are invited to ask questions on how to improve and re-envision mathematics education, how to align mathematics to the ten CES Common Principles, exchange ideas related to math instruction, and share ideas related to one’s own practice teaching math. This panel is open to all levels of teachers!

8. ESSENTIALANALYSIS.ORG
The Coalition of Essential Schools is pleased to announce a new free affiliation benefit. CES has been documenting the process and outcomes of school reform since its inception over 20 years ago. In a true learning community, inquiry is everybody’s work. Teaching, learning, community involvement, leadership, organizational management and change, professional growth – all take place in a continual dynamic of asking good questions and finding evidence that can guide a school’s actions. EssentialAnalysis provides schools with the tools to ask the right questions and engage in a process of meaningful data-based inquiry that can be used to drive school improvement efforts.

On this site you will have the ability to take and analyze surveys on-line, to post your own survey or use one already created, and to administer surveys to students, teachers, and parents. We also provide you with tools to engage in a process of data-based inquiry, to take the results from your surveys and use those results to drive your school improvement.

For more information, please check us out on-line at www.essentialanalysis.org, or contact Jay Feldman, CES Director of Research, at jfeldman@essentialschools.org.

11. MAKE AN IMPACT - CONSIDER A DEGREE PROGRAM AT THE HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Since its founding in 1920, the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) has been training leaders to transform education in the United States and around the world. At HGSE, our mission is to improve student opportunity, achievement, and success by generating knowledge and preparing future leaders in education. We do this by studying and working at the nexus of practice, policy, and research - a theme that grounds our programs, is reflected in our faculty, and is evident in the courses they teach and the pedagogies they employ. We believe it is imperative to understand how the worlds of practice, policy, and research intersect and can communicate with one another as a necessary means of advancing the field of education.

We invite you to consider HGSE if you are thinking about full-time graduate study. Alternatively, we encourage you to refer potential applicants to us, including perhaps your staff or colleagues. We offer a single interdisciplinary doctoral program, which leads to an Ed.D., as well as 13 master's programs that span a range of fields and interests, each of which are one year in length and lead to the Ed.M. degree.

Detailed information about our programs and the HGSE community is available on our website, along with a link to our online application: http://www.gse.harvard.edu/admissions/index.html. The deadlines for study during the 2008-09 academic year are December 14, 2007 for doctoral applicants and January 4, 2008 for master's applicants.

If you are interested in more information, please visit our website or email us at gseadmissions@harvard.edu. We hope to connect with you or someone you know in the future!

12. TAKE PART IN THE CAMPAIGN TO MAKE THE MÉNDEZ CASE REQUIRED CONTENT IN CALIFORNIA’S PUBLIC SCHOOLS
During the Closing Session at Fall Forum, participants viewed the Emmy-award winning film Méndez vs. Westminster: For All the Children/Para Todos los Niños which explored the little known 1947 court case ending school segregation in California. Méndez would later provide some of the legal arguments used by attorneys in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case of 1954. Filmmaker Sandra Robbie and one of the plaintiffs in the Méndez case, Sylvia Méndez, were in attendance at Fall Forum.

Assemblywoman Mary Salas of the 79th District has agreed to author legislation that would require Méndez v. Westminster to be taught in California's schools. Robbie and Salas have officially launched the Million for Méndez letter writing campaign this week. The bill will be introduced on December 4, 2007. To take part in the campaign to make the Méndez case required content in California’s public schools, please contact Sandra Robbie (sandra.robbie@yahoo.com) to find out more information. You may also visit Assemblywoman Salas' webpage: http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a79/mainpage.aspx.

To see a video survey about college student awareness of the Méndez case, please visit YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNE8ljKD_eg. If the link is blocked, go to YouTube and type in Méndez America Surprise.
