============================================================ THE FOLLOWING ARE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFERINGS AVAILABLE FROM MENTOR SCHOOLS IN THE CES SMALL SCHOOLS NETWORK:
2. LIFE LEARNING ACADEMY CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL WORKSHOP – "EMPOWERING AND TRAINING YOUNG LEADERS: A NEW MODEL FOR STUDENT COUNCIL"
In this workshop, the academy will present some of the key school practices that make this model work, e.g., student governance, developing a positive peer culture, effective student discipline, peer mediation, reciprocal restitution, and project-based curriculum. Life Learning students will model an innovative approach for using a student council as an intervention tool with high-risk youths who have not been successful in traditional schools. Through role plays students will demonstrate how daily council sessions are used to provide guidance and accountability for the entire school and how authentic student governance translates into a safe, engaged community.
LOCATION: San Francisco, CA. DATE: February 15, 2008 COST: $50 per person
For more information, please contact Craig Miller, cam@ix.netcom.com.
3. WILDWOOD SCHOOL WORKSHOP ON PROJECT BASED LEARNING (6-12 GRADES)
Project-Based Learning places students at the center of the learning process by recognizing their inherent drive to learn and their capability to do important work. Implementing this systematic teaching method increases student engagement in learning knowledge and skills. Through an inquiry process structured around complex and authentic tasks, students have the opportunity to develop higher-order thinking skills. The result is that students can articulate not only the “what” but also the “why” and “how.” The workshop includes: creating project ideas and authentic tasks; developing rubrics; use in heterogeneous classrooms; individual vs. group work; revision process; performance-based assessment; student demonstrations; and classroom observation.
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA. DATE: February 22, 2008 COST: $125 per person; CES member schools receive a discounted rate of $100 per person.
For more information or to register, please contact Jeanne Fauci, jfauci@wildwood.org.
