1. FALL FORUM CALL FOR PROPOSALS

CES National is now accepting proposals for Fall Forum 2008, which will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, November 6-8, at the Westin Charlotte. This year's theme is "Live It. Learn It. Change It." Proposals are due May 14th.

CES seeks session proposals that bring the “Live It. Learn It. Change It.” theme to life by exploring specific successes and challenges of teaching and learning in accord with the CES Common Principles. Tell us about creating schools for the 21st century that are personalized, equitable, and intellectually challenging through your life, through your teaching and learning, and through the change that you inspire.

***Please note that the period during which CES National will be accepting applications is one month earlier this year, so be sure to submit them before the deadline on May 14th.***

Conference registration will open in mid-August. To learn more about Fall Forum, visit: http://www.essentialschools.org/fallforum.html.

2. SMALL SCHOOLS SUMMER INSTITUTE 2008

On May 1, registration opens for the 2008 CES Small Schools Summer Institute, "The Essentials of Small Schools: Principles and Practices for Equity and Achievement." The Institute will take place July 14-18 in Portland, Oregon, and is organized in collaboration with E3 (Employers for Education Excellence) and the Educational Policy Improvement Center (EPIC) at the University of Oregon.

The CES Small Schools Summer Institute features workshops and roundtables with some of the most effective small school educators in the country, including those from CES Mentor Schools Urban Academy, Eagle Rock School, Boston Arts Academy, Quest High School, Wildwood School, and Fenway High School. The Summer Institute is open to individuals and school teams who are starting new small schools, working in large schools converting to small autonomous schools, or who are looking for a community of experienced practitioners with whom to learn from and share best practices.

For more information and to register, please visit: http://www.essentialschools.org/events.html.

3. MAY IS NATIONAL EXHIBITION MONTH!

Join CES in a nationwide campaign to promote and celebrate exhibitions as a preferred form of student assessment. Now in its third year, "National Exhibition Month" is an annual campaign in which schools and support organizations are invited to participate in activities that make their exhibition work public and to advocate for the use of exhibitions in their local contexts.

Our website offers guidelines and tools to help you create a successful local event and reach out to the public and the media. We also have a video clip from the EssentialVisions DVD series that shows students preparing for and executing their senior exhibition. In addition, we’ve compiled a list of the schools that will be participating this year, with their dates and activities.

To view these materials, the list of participating schools, more information, and suggestions on how you can participate, please visit: http://www.essentialschools.org/exhibition.html.
