Description: Empowering and Training Young Leaders: A New Model for Student Council
Life Learning (LLA) is a San Francisco Unified charter school, located on Treasure Island. LLA serves high-school aged youths who are involved in the juvenile justice system and/or have problems including school failure, family problems, gang involvement, poverty, abuse, and substance abuse. In this workshop, we will present some of the key school practices that make this model work, e.g., student governance, developing a positive peer culture, effective student discipline, peer mediation, reciprocal restitution, and project-based curriculum. Life Learning students will model an innovative approach for using a student council as an intervention tool with high-risk youths who have not been successful in traditional schools. Through role plays students will demonstrate how daily council sessions are used to provide guidance and accountability for the entire school and how authentic student governance translates into a safe, engaged community.
