Mission:  Satellite Academy High School is a multi-sited transfer school for students who have not been successful in at least one other high school before admission. We service approximately 750 students in 4 buildings that are located in 3 boroughs. Most of our students have been in 1 — 3 schools prior to a starting in our school and enter at the average age of 17 *. Our students start within the range of 0 — 25credits. (0 — 12.5 State units.) Some were dropouts or long term absentees in the year prior to starting with us. Others simply want to continue their education in an alternative, small school environment. Due to the unsatisfying experiences, poor attendance and/or performance of many of our students in their previous school(s) we find that they are starting with us as needing academic support, a rigorous curriculum, and accessible guidance and counseling services, no matter how many high school courses they may have passed previously. Our mission has always been to help our students overcome their negative feelings about school, improve their attendance, become active learners and graduate with full capabilities for future success. All students begin with orientation and new student preparation classes. Skill and content acquisition are stressed from the very beginning. All students are in an advisor class that is conducted by their grade advisor who maintains their records, makes parental contact, does course selection and refers the student for services. Students graduate after earning the appropriate number of credits, passing State tests and successful completion of learning portfolios. We have been redoubling our efforts to make sure that every student has a plan for college or work upon graduation. Each site has a college advisor as well as a course for all seniors which is intended to help them make plans for post-secondary school life. Each site has made a commitment to inter-disciplinary curriculum, portfolio and performance based assessment methodologies, integrating art throughout the curriculum and staff development. We have partnerships with over 30 academic and arts organizations and have been training student teachers from a number of local colleges.
