Mission:  The James Baldwin School is a small, community-minded, college preparatory public school. It is our mission to provide a philosophical and practical education for all students, an education that features creativity and inquiry, encourages habitual reading and productivity, as well as self-reflection and meaningful thought. The James Baldwin School will inspire students to think for themselves and to form opinions based on conviction, research and knowledge. Our model of schooling is based on Coalition of Essential Schools and Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound school design principles – and on the work of our CES Mentor School, Humanities Preparatory Academy. Like Prep, we will be a transfer school for students, and their families, who have previously found high school unresponsive to their needs and ambitions. We agree with James Baldwin that with honest self-reflection, love and courage, adults and young people can join together to “make America what America must become”: a more democratic and just society. 6.3.05
