Mission:  The Institute for Collaborative Education (I.C.E.) offers a student-centered education for 6th-12th graders in New York City. Organized around the 10 Principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools (see Attachment A) , I.C.E. engages faculty, students, parents, and community and develops a shared community of lifelong learners. Our program has academic rigor, where students graduate by Portfolio and a series of academic defense panels before faculty, students, parents, and peers. I.C.E. takes an instructional approach that balances literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific method, use of technology as a tool, and an integration of the arts. We ask students to complete projects, develop portfolios of their best work, and offer multi-media presentations that demonstrate their deep understanding of subject matter. Our graduates are uniformly prepared for college, graduate school, and careers in all arenas. Through a nurturing “small school” environment, we engage students to appreciate the importance of their ideas. Through collaborations with local universities, community-based organizations, corporate sponsors, and other local entities, we create opportunities for our students to engage in course work and internships that provide them access to the larger “city as classroom.” Our educational approach engages stakeholders in the democracy of education. We enhance our pupil personnel services to our student body and their families through external collaborations that provide on-site counselors and our faculty serving as mentors, thereby supporting the whole child during the school day and after-school hours. Through our ongoing commitment to a tight-knit diverse student body and a closely connected parent association, I.C.E. supports the academic, athletic, and creative arts development of our students through vast school day and after-school offerings.
