Even with all the attention given to, and lessons “learned” from the historical harm of oppression (e.g. racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, etc.) within our institutions, our schools continue to be places that seem designed to welcome some of our students and to shun, shame, and push out others. Come hear from a panel of LGBQT youth and educators who answer the Essential Question: What is the role of families and educators in leading “our” students toward improved and equitable outcomes for each student? Gregory Peters, the Executive Director of the San Francisco Coalition of Essential Small Schools (SF-CESS), a self-identified queer educator himself, will moderate this panel. At the end of the panel, there will be time for the panel to answer audience-generated questions.
San Francisco Coalition of Essential Small Schools (SF-CESS), a CES affiliate center, intends to make an impact on the design and sustainability of new and existing small schools in San Francisco by providing coaching, technical assistance and professional development focused on equity, inquiry and achievement to a network of schools. SF-CESS shares best practices for creating the conditions necessary for schools to be equitable and high performing. SF-CESS intends to make a significant contribution to achievement and the lives of children in the San Francisco-Bay Area, as well as throughout the nation.
