Students who can’t access grade-level text when they reach middle and high school are often so unable to engage in the educational process that they drop out of school. When students fall several grade levels behind in reading, they need teachers who know exactly what to do about it. The strategies shared in this workshop will give participants what they need to quickly make a difference with students who are struggling with decoding text.
Sharon Zinke is a specialist in the area of literacy development and reading intervention. She has worked extensively with struggling readers at elementary, middle, and high schools in her years as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, and resource specialist. Most recently, she has worked with elementary and middle schools in the Bay Area to quickly raise the decoding and word recognition levels of students reading significantly below grade level. She teaches courses for reading teachers at the University of California Extension, Berkeley, and works with classroom teachers, literacy coaches, and special education teachers to plan effective intervention and classroom strategies for struggling readers.
