No Subject Left Behind: The Fight to Preserve Social Studies and More in Our Schools
Civic engagement and civil discourse are at risk as NCLB emphasizes testing in English and math while narrowing access to other engaging and meaningful curricula. Learn how the California Council for Social Studies (CCSS) fought against micro-managed curricular mandates and advocated for policies allowing rigorous whole child education. Fred Jones, Legislative Analyst for CCSS, will explain CCSS’ legislative agenda and lead a workshop teaching participants how to build relationships with local, state, and national policy makers.

Understanding Our Past to Illuminate Our Future: A Glimpse into the History of CES
What can the institutional history of CES teach us about our future as an organization? This session allows participants to examine the fine-grain, behind-the-scenes story of CES in its formative years through letters, handwritten notes, internal correspondence, and other documents. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss these documents; draw lessons from CES's past; and report out their ideas, thoughts, and questions about the future of the organization. In doing so, we will emphasize the principle of democracy and equity both as a lens for making meaning of the historical sources as well as by giving all attendees a chance to participate in meaningful dialogue.

Transforming Staff Meetings into Professional Development Opportunities
How do we structure time to honor teachers’ knowledge, experience and voice so that they may collaborate to best serve our students and close the achievement gap? Many of the teachers at Leadership High School have stated they came to our school for its professional learning community. But before we could work toward closing the achievement gap for our students, we had to learn to how to be and work together as adults. Participate in a workshop modeled after our weekly meetings as we share our lessons learned about fostering a community of learners where the voices of teachers, students, and parents matter.
