Recasting the Senior Year: Models for Rigor, Relevance, and Engagement
The presenters, former directors of senior guidance at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, and authors of “Making Grade 12 Meaningful,” share four dynamic programs for engaging seniors. These models embrace the themes of transition, leadership, self-advocacy, and service-learning. Participants will identify and address important transition issues, learn how to design a Senior Institute, encourage project-based and student-directed learning, implement a year-long service project, and foster powerful mentoring relationships that can positively affect the entire school culture.

Students Taking Action: Educating for Positive and Respectful Participation
Human Rights Education and Peace Education bring greater dignity to people's lives. Service-learning incorporates these values into formal curriculum. A meaningful model of service-learning requires more than "community service hours" to inspire students to take action in their communities, understand them, and question them. This workshop will examine the potential of service-learning in school, create new ideas, and connect peace education with personal development.

Unpacking Privilege: Cultural Competency in Service-Learning
Service-learning’s best intentions can be derailed if schools ignore cultural blind spots. In fact, badly implemented service-learning can be culturally destructive and reinforce negative stereotypes. Join a conversation to explore the Cultural Proficiency Continuum for Service-Learning and develop cultural competency indicators inline with the K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice to help promote culturally proficient program design that helps close gaps in our educational and social systems.
