Alia Tyner-Mulings

Alia Tyner graduated from Central Park East Secondary School in 1994. After spending the previous twelve years at Central Park East and CPESS, she moved to Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1998. Following her graduation from Oberlin, Ms. Tyner went on to teach mathematics at Humanities Preparatory Academy in New York City. Ms. Tyner spent two years at HPA, after which she decided to continue her education at the graduate level. Ms. Tyner is now a doctoral candidate in the sociology program at The City University of New York, Graduate School and University Center. Her dissertation takes an organizational sociology perspective on CPESS and the ways in which the school both achieved and failed to achieve its institutional functions. Ms. Tyner was named as a Theodore R. Sizer Dissertation Scholar for her doctoral work. Ms. Tyner currently works for The Macaulay Honors College at The City College.
