The Coalition of Essential Schools, the Colorado Children's Campaign, Eagle Rock School, and PEBC invite you to join us for our 2006 Summer Institute at the Four Points By Sheraton Denver Southeast in Denver, Colorado. This institute will include workshops, discussion groups, and facilitated planning time organized around the following essential question:
How do we design and continuously improve schools that support powerful instruction and success for all students?
Presenters and speakers include some of the most effective, renowned small school educators in the country. Workshops and roundtables will be led by CES Mentor Schools including: Urban Academy, Eagle Rock School, Boston Arts Academy, Quest High School, Wildwood School and Fenway High School (for the full list of CES Mentor Schools, click here).
Participation is open to individuals and teams of educators interested in small high school design. The Institute will provide powerful professional development for large high school teams interested in converting to small schools, as well as teams creating or improving new small schools.
Key Features:
* Workshops by CES Small Schools Network Members: There will be two types of workshops: one six hour intensive and two - three hour workshops.
* Daily Team Planning and Design: Teams will set goals for the institute at the beginning and will have time each day for planning and design work. CES Small Schools Network teams will include pairs of CES mentors and new school design teams or new schools. Participating teams who are not members of the CES Small Schools Network may have an opportunity to receive coaching from one of our partners or centers.
* "Ask a Mentor" Roundtables: Participants can learn more about exemplary CES small schools through a gallery of portfolios and information on each of the mentor schools. Participants will have an opportunity to speak with staff from the Mentor Schools about "what has been essential" to making their schools powerful environments for learning.
* Networking and Relationship Building: There will be a series of events providing opportunities for team building and networking. These include a special welcoming dinner and reception on Monday, and a special event on Thursday night.
* Critical Friends Conversations: Participants will join a group of educators to take part in facilitated discussions called Critical Friends Conversations (CFC). These CFCs will be centered on themes of equity and democracy in education. Through the use of protocols, CFCs offer a safe space for us to move from awareness to understanding to taking action in our schools.
* Youth Participation: This all-day session will be led by youth for youth and will include workshops by students from Harmony School in Bloomington, Indiana, Connections Public Charter School in Hilo, Hawaii, Wildwood School in Los Angeles, California, and Young Women's Leadership Charter School in Chicago, Illinois. Students will participate in team building exercises, set goals for the week, and continue to build a national youth network.
* Small School Design: The institute is centered around the design of small schools: for start-ups, for large school conversions or existing small schools interested in improving themselves.
* High School Conversion Planning: In addition to the symposium described below, there will be a series of workshops specific to the conversion of large schools into small schools.
* Special Event - Lessons from the Past; Solutions for the Future - Manual High School Symposium (hosted in collaboration with the Colorado Children's Campaign).
Cost: $10.00 at the door (free for Summer Institute attendees) - July 12th, 3:00 - 6:30 pm
In 2001, Manual High School converted into three new small schools with hopes to attain higher degrees of achievement for its 1,100 students. Five years later, the Manual schools are being closed. What can we learn from their experience? What other more successful conversion stories exist across the nation?
Join us for an afternoon of reflection as we examine the successes and challenges of the Manual High School experience. The first part of the program will feature a panel discussion composed of former and current players in the Manual High School story. The second part of the program will focus on the future of conversion work, examples of early successes, and provide an opportunity for discussion and problem solving. High school conversion leaders from across the country will help to guide small group discussions about the future implications of this work.
